Sunday School Program
“Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14
Our Sunday School program strives to teach Christian values while building relationships with God. Classes of all ages focus on developing an understanding of the Bible, fostering compassion for and acceptance of others, and helping to recognize God within their lives, through the work of the Holy Spirit.
Sunday School begins when the children are dismissed from the worship service – about 10:20am, following the Moment for Children and Youth, or following the Communion service on the first Sunday of each month. Sunday School programming continues to approximately 11:15am. Children in the Undercroft (Pre-K, K, 1st Grade) are picked up by their parents at this time. Older children join their parents in coffee hour following their classroom activities.
Bible Sunday 2010
Sunday Morning Format
Children attend the beginning portion of Worship with their families through the Moment for Children & Youth (small interactive sermon designed specifically for kids of all ages). We feel it is important for children to be involved with their church family in worship, music and prayer prior to leaving for Sunday School.
- Pre-K through 3rd graders begin in the Activity Center in the lower level of the church house for Treble choir. Children in this group sing for the first 10 minutes of Sunday school, then are dismissed to their classrooms with their teachers.
- Pre-K, K and 1st graders should be picked up at 11:15 from the Undercroft by their parents.
- 4th - 8th graders go directly to their Sunday School classrooms from the Worship service. These children will join their parents at coffee hour in Hubley Hall at the completion of their lessons, usually between 11:15 - 11:30am.
Nursery
Our Nursery provides care each Sunday morning for infants and children up to three years of age. Vibrating pagers are available for families attending the worship service, in case your child needs you. Our nursery is conveniently located in the Undercroft, the space below our church sanctuary. Our Nursery attendant, Patty Condon, is warm, friendly and loves children!
Pre-K - 6th Grade
This age group utilizes the “Power Express” curriculum, a rotation based experience that presents Biblical information through a variety of themes. Each week children rotate to a new theme with their age related peers. Themes include Cooking, Creative Arts, Movies and Video, Games, and a Surprise rotation. It’s an exciting way to learn the stories of the Bible through different media and helps children of varying learning styles to connect with the Bible and with God.
Grades 7th & 8th
Pre-teens experience the Bible through a combination of experiences. Our focus is to create a space where children are comfortable exploring their faith and discussing challenges they face in their everyday lives. We use a variety of media from "Teen Sunday School," and "Simply Youth Ministry" curriculum, to “Joan of Arcadia” (video series combined with a Biblically based discussion that follows each episode), to outreach opportunities connecting them with their church and local community needs. 7th and 8th Graders also remain in worship one Sunday a month and work as a team (or on their own) to answer basic questions about the service, scripture and what questions they may have to bring up at our next discussion meeting. This group shares a breakfast snack each week in class.
Children’s Music Programs
Treble Choir – music for ages Pre-K through 3rd Grade, is learned during the first 10 minutes of Sunday School, and is led by church volunteers. The children perform approximately 4 times a year in worship, in addition to special services on Christmas Eve and Children’s Sunday in June.
Chancel Choir – music for children in 4th through 8th Grade. Children rehearse after Sunday School and coffee hour, from 11:40am – 12:00 noon. The Chancels are led by Dir. of Music Ministry, Nathan Bayreuther. Special musical opportunities include an ecumenical children’s choir festival once a year.
How can I get involved?
Adults are encouraged to volunteer as Sunday School teachers to help our Christian Education program. Each year we work to put together teams of 4 or more adults for each classroom, so that volunteers can teach an average of once a month, or in blocks of Sundays – whatever their schedule can accommodate. Curriculum is prepared in advance in folder packets, supplies are purchased for you, and classrooms are set up with supplies and activities each week. Volunteers simply need to review the plan and lead the children. Each classroom also has a high school youth assistant to help take attendance and assist the adult leaders. To volunteer, please contact Lyn Lunn,
Dir. of Children & Youth Ministry at lynlunn@fccmadison.org.
