Dave Brubeck, a recipient of Kennedy Center Honors in 2009, has also been designated a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress and a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts. Now, 90 years old, he continues to be one of the most popular musicians in jazz. His current Quartet won the DownBeat Reader’s poll in 2010. The first time his quartet won the DownBeat Reader’s poll was 57 years ago in 1953. In a career spanning more than six decades, his introduction of odd time signatures, improvised counterpoint and advanced harmonies has made him one of the defining voices in jazz. His album “Time Out” with its signature songs “Take Five” and “Blue Rondo a la Turk” has been placed in the Grammy Hall of Fame. In recognition of the Dave Brubeck Quartet’s many international tours, in 2008 he became the first individual recipient of the State Department’s Benjamin Franklin Award for Public Diplomacy. In 1994 he received the National Medal of the Arts from President Bill Clinton. He has received honorary degrees from universities in America, Germany, England, Canada and Switzerland. The governments of Austria, France and Italy have also honored him. Beyond the jazz world, his compositions for orchestra and chorus, ballet and chamber music have earned him a place in the American Classical Hall of Fame.
