OWL values: Self Worth, Sexual Health, Responsibility, Justice and Inclusivity

First Church, in collaboration with Shoreline Unitarian Universalist Society and
the North Madison Congregational Church, offers two OWL (Our Whole Lives)
value-based sexuality education classes.

More information on both offerings is available at the websites of the UCC and
the Unitarian Universalist Association who jointly created the OWL program.
All facilitators (teachers) are trained by OWL personnel from one of these institutions.

Grades 4-6 OWL –OWL models and teaches caring, compassion, respect, and justice. It helps children understand the physical and emotional changes of puberty. Through helpful HomeLinks, parents and caregivers can be actively involved in this exploration of growing older. Participants explore values, communication and decision making, as well as physical health and development.  This ten-workshop curriculum is designed to help children gain the knowledge, life principles, and skills they need to understand and express their sexuality in holistic, life-enhancing ways.

Grades 7-9 OWL –Parents are children’s primary teachers, but what is society teaching our children about sexuality? Our Whole Lives is an antidote to sexualized media messages, peer pressure, misinformation and prejudice. It provides accurate, age-appropriate information, puts sexuality in the context of values and personal responsibility, supports healthy decision making and strengthens social skills. These skills and values help prepare youth to make healthy choices for life.
