“Having the Talk

Helping Kids Develop Healthy Relationships and Sexuality in a Highly Sexualized Tech-driven Culture.
For Parents, Grandparents, Educators and Care-givers

Living in an overtly sexualized culture with rapidly changing technology has posed new and complex challenges in teaching sexual education to children. Many parents are unaware of the full impact of these cultural shifts, and the effects it has on sexual development. Sexualized images and content can be harmful to children as this material impairs cognitive, emotional and spiritual development.

Researchers are now seeing the mounting evidence of the damaging influence that a sex-saturated culture has on us individually, our intimate relationships, our families and our communities. It is critical that parents/caregivers are equipped early as the primary sex educators for their children. A one-time talk just before puberty is insufficient. Early education and intervention can have a powerful effect in the prevention of many sexual problems including: sexual addiction, sexual dysfunction, pornography use, unhealthy sexual acting out, sexting, cybersex, and sexual violence.

Wednesday Bible Study in the Activity Room
Oct 18 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am

The Bible is endlessly fascinating, beautiful, dramatic and confounding. In our Congregationalist tradition, it has served as the central authority of our life for over 400 hundred years. So we invite you to join us on Wednesday mornings this fall to read and engage in this ‘library of revelation,’ as we consider the various ways in which God continues to speak to us through this holy scripture.

Each week we will read two passages, typically one from the Old Testament and one from the Gospels. The readings are taken from the Revised Common Lectionary, the three-year cycle of scripture readings that determine the scriptures read on Sunday mornings. For more information on the Lectionary, we invite you visit the website, www.commontexts.org.

Additionally, you can find a reflection on the each week’s lectionary at the UCC website: www.ucc.org/worship/samuel/.

No experience with the Bible is necessary to join us and all questions, comments and thoughts are more than welcome. Everyone is welcome to join us as often as you wish or as your schedule allows, knowing that your presence will enrich our time together. We meet every Wednesday morning from 1000am to 1100am, in the Pool Room, downstairs in the Church House. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Reverend Vetter at tcvetter@gmail.com
